I just got a RES and wehn he's swimming looks like loose skin hanging, what should i do?

I just got a small red eared slider turtle. He looks like he has skin hanging off him, when in the water. Is he shedding? Is it maybe some sort of fungus? Is there something I should treat the water with? This is the first time I've had a water turtle and I need some quick help!

I would check for fungus. However, turtles do shed occasionally. But check for fungus just to be sure. If it is fungus, you can use an "ick" treatment like you would use for fish. "Ick" is a fungal infection of fish, but turtles can get it, too. This is especially likely if you have fish and turtles together-- don't laugh, some people do it.

Also be sure that your turtle has a rock for climbing and basking. RES's are semi-aquatic and need to bask occasionally.
Reply:just trim it off with a good sharp pair of scissors
Reply:This could be many things- how big are the chunks of hanging skin, and where are they hanging from?

In my experience, 99% of slider problems are caused by simple details in their daily care- too cold, water quality, etc.

I suggest reviewing a good care site, like www.redearslider.com and see if there is anything you can improve. If the care os solid and nothing changes after a short time, let a vet or local turtle guru look at it.
