I've lost over 120 pounds by eating more food (eating 3 to 5X/day rather than then once/day I was before) and maintaining a regular exercise program and frustrated over the loose and hanging skin. I still have more weight to lose and being to lose heart.
What is the best avenue to go after losing a large amount of weight in regards to excess and loose skin?
That would depend on your age. If you are in the thirties or under range, a firming lotion and exercise may be all you need. Skin is attached to muscle by little tendons- these parts holding on are what cause the dimpling we all know as cellulite. Toning the muscle and firming the foundation for the skin will tighten the tendons and secure the skin down tighter...
If you are beyond thirties, you can certainly still try the firming lotions and exercise (especially the exercise, since it's good for you), but you may need to have the excess skin removed. The upside- if you talk to your doctor about it, some will refer you to a plastic surgeon. Some insurance will cover this, as hanging flaps of skin can cause rashes and foul odor. Definately worth looking into.
Reply:Though I'm usually against this I'll have to say plastic surgery.
It really is the only way to get rid of those rolls of left over skin.
But I suggest you complete your weight loss goal before you chose to undergo surgery.
Reply:This is a common problem, I hear about it all the time on the low-carb forum I'm on.
Basically the strategy most recommended is to first finish taking the weight off, then to maintain for a while. *Some* of the skin will tighten up as your body adjusts, especially if you are exercising. Once you have maintained your weight for a while, then you need plastic surgery to remove what is left.
Reply:Congratulations on your big weight loss. You can really be proud of yourself. That's quite an accomplishment. Don't fret over the loose %26amp; hanging skin. Not all of it can be tightened, so focus on what can be. If you go to a place like Curves or a place much like that, they will show you how to tighten the areas that are bothering you. It will take time, so please be patient. Keep doing what you've been doing, lose the weight you have left to lose, %26amp; continue eating %26amp; exercising as you have. You'll be just fine. If you have to have a tummy tuck, arm tuck, etc. you may have to save up for that because most insurance companies won't pay for that. That's considered cosmetic surgery.
