Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do. I believe staying active and exercising can minimize the problem. But beyond that, the matter is highly genetic...if good skin elasticity is in your genes, you're golden. If not, you will have more problems.
The good news is, not everyone has a great deal of damage after rapid weight loss. I had the surgery you mention a little over two years ago. I do have a little damage to my skin, but it's really NOTHING that bothers me. My stomach flattened back up, but a couple of areas I didn't think would be a problem jiggle a little. (My upper arms! Ack!) Still, I'm comfortable and happy with how I look. I wouldn't risk surgery to correct the problem because it doesn't bother me enough to put myself through that.
Some people say if you're under 40 and under 350 pounds when you have surgery, you will come through with little excess skin. But I still believe your own tendencies will have a lot to do with it too.
